Yu-Gi-Oh! Monster Capsule: Breed and Battle (遊戯王 モンスターカプセル ブリード&バトル Yugiō Monsutā Kapuseru: Burīdo ando Batoru), frequently abbreviated MCBB, is the first Yu-Gi-Oh! video game, released by Konami on July 23, 1998 for the PlayStation. It features a more well-developed variant of the Capsule Monster Chess game from the manga.
Monster Capsule: Breed and Battle is the only video game to feature Capsule Monster Chess, though Yu-Gi-Oh! Monster Capsule GB features a modified version of the game and many of the monsters from MCBB, and Yu-Gi-Oh! Capsule Monster Coliseum features the spinoff game Capsule Monsters. This is one of the two games to predate the OCG.
Plot
Yu-Gi-Oh! Monster Capsule: Breed and Battle primarily features characters from the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga. The player raises and trains Capsule Monsters to defeat opponents in a tournament. Opponents include Yugi Mutou, Katsuya Jonouchi, Anzu Mazaki, Mokuba Kaiba, Ryo Bakura, Sugoroku Mutou, Seto Kaiba and Dark Yugi.
Gameplay
Gameplay involves many a number of elements seen in virtual pet games. The player can battle opponents using a team of monsters they own and can strengthen and evolve their monsters.
Monsters
The game features 103 monsters, including:
- 25 pieces, based on monsters from various games in the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga:
- 20 Capsule Monster Chess pieces: All pieces, except for "Devil Castle" and "Hyumoko".
- 4 Duel Monsters cards: "Mystical Elf", "Hitotsu-Me Giant", "Blackland Fire Dragon", and "Blue-Eyes White Dragon"
- 1 Monster World piece: "Zorc".
- 78 original monsters.
Of the original monsters, seven went on to become cards:
- 6 became collector's cards: "Sonic Eye", "Runner Lizard", "Batty", "Red Scorpion", "Eyeronoid", and "Demonis"
- 1 became an OCG card: "Tyhone"
