A Starter Deck (Japanese: スターターデッキ Sutātā Dekki) is a pre-constructed deck made for beginner players to learn how to play the game. They are often styled after a specific character's Deck, often one of the protagonists. As opposed to Structure Decks, which are focused around a specific theme such as Type, Attribute or archetype, Starter Decks typically contain more general cards and lack a strong theme.

Starter Decks also include a Dueling guide and a paper playmat. Unlike Structure Decks, whose guides are specific to the Deck's strategy and whose mats feature one of the Deck's important cards in the background, the guides in Starter Decks contain general Dueling tips and the mats have a general background design.

The original Starter Decks (before Starter Deck 2006) had 50 cards, but the newest usually have 40-45 cards each.
