OCG Rulings

[Regarding the effect "During your Main Phase: You can destroy 1 DARK monster in your hand or face-up field, and if you do, add 1 "Yubel", or 1 card that mentions it, from your Deck to your hand, except "Nightmare Pain"."][1]

  • It starts a Chain Link and can be activated in the Spell & Trap Zone.
  • At resolution, apply "destroy 1 DARK monster in your hand or face-up field". (You cannot destroy a DARK Monster Card in the Spell & Trap Zone.) If a monster was destroyed successfully, apply "add 1 "Yubel", or 1 card that mentions it except "Nightmare Pain", from your Deck to your hand".
  • Destroying a monster and adding a card to your hand happen at the same time.
  • A card that mentions "Yubel" refers to a card that specifically lists the card name "Yubel" in its card text.

[Regarding the effect "While you control a "Yubel" monster, your opponent's monsters that can attack must attack "Yubel" monsters."][1]

  • It does not start a Chain Link and is applied in the Spell & Trap Zone.
  • It affects your opponent's monsters.
  • If you control 2 or more "Yubel" monsters in your Monster Zone, your opponent chooses the attack target.

[Regarding the effect "Your opponent takes any battle damage you would have taken from battles involving your "Yubel" monsters."][1]

  • It does not start a Chain Link and is applied in the Spell & Trap Zone.
  • The damage inflicted to your opponent is treated as battle damage.

Q&A Rulings

  • Q: If I activate the effect "You can add to your hand or Set 1 Spell/Trap from your Deck that mentions "Yubel"" of "Spirit of Yubel", can I add "Nightmare Throne" to my hand?
A: No, you cannot. A Spell/Trap Card that mentions "Yubel" refers to a Spell/Trap Card that specifically lists the card name "Yubel" in its card text. The text of "Nightmare Throne" lists ""Yubel" monster", but this refers to all "Yubel" monsters, not specifically the card "Yubel". Therefore, even if you activate the effect of "Spirit of Yubel", you cannot add "Nightmare Throne" to your hand. Similarly, you cannot add "Nightmare Throne" to your hand with the effect of "Nightmare Pain".[2]
  • Q: "Yubel" is face-up in my Monster Zone and the effect of "Nightmare Pain" is being applied. What happens in the following situations?
    (A) If the only monsters in my opponent's Monster Zones are Defense Position monsters or monsters that cannot attack due to some card effect
    (B) If the only monster in my opponent's Monster Zones is an Attack Position "Blackwing Full Armor Master" that is unaffected by other cards' effects
    (C) If the only monsters in my opponent's Monster Zones are monsters that can attack directly
A: (A) Since there are no monsters that can attack, your opponent does not need to enter the Battle Phase. However, if they have a monster with an effect that allows it to attack while it is in face-up Defense Position, your opponent must enter the Battle Phase and attack the "Yubel" you control with that monster.
(B) Since "Blackwing Full Armor Master" is unaffected by the 2nd effect of "Nightmare Pain", your opponent does not need to enter the Battle Phase. (They can enter the Battle Phase, but they can also proceed to Main Phase 2 without attacking.)
(C) Since there is a monster that can attack in your opponent's Monster Zone, your opponent must enter the Battle Phase and attack the "Yubel" you control.[3]
A: During damage calculation, first, the effect "Your opponent gains 3000 LP" of "Geistgrinder Golem" activates and resolves. After that, damage calculation is performed.
When multiple effects related to damage calculation are applied, the damage is determined by considering the effects in the following order.
  1. Inflict double battle damage
  2. Both players take battle damage
  3. Battle damage you take is also inflicted to your opponent, you/your opponent takes battle damage instead
  4. Battle damage is treated as effect damage
  5. Gain LP equal to the battle damage instead
  6. Battle damage becomes 0
  7. Battle damage becomes halved
  8. Battle damage becomes doubled
  9. Battle damage becomes a fixed value
  10. Do not take battle damage that is more/less than or equal to a fixed value
In the above list, the effect "Your opponent takes any battle damage you would have taken from battles involving your "Yubel" monsters" of "Nightmare Pain" is 3 and the effect "you take no battle damage from battles involving this card" of "Yubel - The Loving Defender Forever" is 6. Therefore, the 3000 damage you would have taken is inflicted to your opponent instead.[4]
