Forum:Sidebar links

From Yugipedia
Jump to: navigation, search

The Yu-Gi-Oh! Wikia is one of the largest on Wikia, and yet we still have an essentially vanilla sidebar, after more than five years and 40,000 pages. Other wikis use the sidebar to allow quick navigation between core articles - see for instance RuneScape Wiki or Family Guy Wiki. I think it's high time this was fixed, and am interested in hearing suggested sidebar layouts - thoughts? ダイノガイ千?!? · Talk⇒Dinoguy1000 18:07, June 14, 2010 (UTC)

I agree that the sidebar of this wikia needs a make-over. I suggest we can put up the link to the current banlist. Deck Types can be added which branch out into A-C, D-F, so on. Is it possible to have the Forum link branch out into the different sections of the Forum?-- HHTurtle  (Talk) 18:35, June 14, 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, this is something long overdue. The message you've linked to is for the Monobook sidebar. I think we want to attack the Monaco one, which is done separately.
I think we should consider including:
  • Sets, as the most recent sets are always our most visited articles
  • Archetypes and Deck types: These seem to be popular too.
  • As suggested above, forums should be branched.
  • I think we should have something for anime and manga, which branches to series, characters and episodes/chapters.
And consider removing the following:
  • Featured users. This is more of the techs infatuation with edit counts. And I think it's why TwoTailedFox keeps getting hundreds of messages from new users despite not being active in over a year.
  • Highest voted: Is it just me or are these nearly always very random unusual choices?
-- Deltaneos (talk) 20:40, June 14, 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for pointing out the correct message; I've updated the link in my original post accordingly. I've also created a sitenotice pointing to this discussion due to its importance.
I think it should also include at least one "Topics" dropdown, which would include links to general topics like gameplay terminology or the rarity overview.
I also have to ask if the community portal is really used any more, and if not, we should probably simply remove the link to it. The recent changes link should also be removed, since that is also linked in the toolbox below the sidebar. ダイノガイ千?!? · Talk⇒Dinoguy1000 22:23, June 14, 2010 (UTC)
The community portal and current events aren't not really used, since we started using Forum:Yu-Gi-Oh! Wiki Discussion. Although it would be nice if we kept general Yu-Gi-Oh! discussion and actual wiki discussion separate.
Why rarities specifically? Gameplay terminology seems to be important, though.
Two recent changes links. Makes sense to remove the one that's unlikely to be used. The Alt + (Shift) + R shortcut should still work as long as one of them uses recentchanges-url.
It's probably worth mentioning that people can customise the toolbox section to suit their own preference at Special:MyPage/Monaco-toolbox. -- Deltaneos (talk) 22:44, June 14, 2010 (UTC)
"[A]ren't not" or "are not"? ;) And while more separation would be nice, most of the topics in the wiki discussion forum have nothing to do with the wiki specifically - many consist of random card/rulings/fanon duel questions/etc.
No reason in particular, they're just one of the first things that popped into my mind since I was discussing them recently elsewhere.
I thought keyboard shortcuts worked regardless of the sidebar/toolbox contents?
Yeah, although I can't think of any neat way to do it from the sidebar or toolbox itself. It could be included in the welcome messages, though. ダイノガイ千?!? · Talk⇒Dinoguy1000 23:46, June 14, 2010 (UTC)
Sorry, meant "aren't"/"are not". -- Deltaneos (talk) 00:03, June 15, 2010 (UTC)

I know that the Wiki Discussion section is for discussions about changes to the wikia and Community consensus about it. However, there is no suitable section in the Forum for random topics like "what's your favourite card", "Who you'd think would win", etc... Maybe we could open a separate section for them and call it "Casual Discussion". That way it would be easier to categorize the topics. I agree with removing the Featured users section. I think that is how most of the Admins are targeted by vandals.-- HHTurtle  (Talk) 03:44, June 15, 2010 (UTC)

I definitely agree with removing "Featured Users", I myself sent TTF a message when I first joined, not thinking to check the date of his last edit. Unless there's a way to set up that section so that it's not based on edit count. Anything that cleans up the forums would be great, and I quite like HideHeadTurtle's suggestion. Links to the most important anime characters would be nice, but nothing too excessive, since the portal links on the main page cover that pretty well. Perhaps links to the arc pages of each of the series would be beneficial? My only other suggestion is links to pages in [[Category:Characters' Decks]], though I think some consensus on what constitutes a sufficient number of Decks for a separate article is needed. Cheesedude 03:52, June 15, 2010 (UTC)

I kind of agree with Cheesedude and got nothing more to say. Fallensilence 08:58, June 15, 2010 (UTC)Fallensilence

Reject it or suggest changes if you want. It's just an idea to get us started.

It does have some portal pages that don't exist, but they can be made. And I'm guessing everyone is in favour of splitting the Yu-Gi-Oh! Wiki Discussion forum in general discussion and wiki discussion? -- Deltaneos (talk) 15:47, June 15, 2010 (UTC)

Like the idea of a link to the latest ban list; that'll be really helpfull when im building my (amazing) decks. A link to recent/soon to be released sets would be great too. Im not exactly great at all with the techy stuff, but what has been suggested here so far looks great. Personally though Im not a great fan of the anime so I couldnt give a towel about what you do with that. --Its the EndOfTheWorld! Mwuhahahaha! 15:54, June 15, 2010 (UTC)

Looks good to me, and I'd be happy to assist in the creation of any of the nonexistent portals. And yes, splitting the forums would be great. Cheesedude 16:36, June 15, 2010 (UTC)

I think this idea looks great. The only problem I see is the text "March 2010 Lists" Having this text here would mean updating the sidebar every six months, how about we just put "Current Forbidden/Limited Lists" or "Current Format", just something more generic. — This unsigned comment was made by BassNettoHikari2 (talkcontribs) 17:17, June 15, 2010

The "March 2010 Lists" text is the actual page name of the current Forbidden/Limited list; the text that would actually get displayed is "Forbidden & Limited". I'd agree that updating the sidebar every six months for the new Forbidden/Limited list isn't optimal though; perhaps it would be better to link through a redirect that itself gets updated when a new list is released? This would also allow links to the current list in other areas without having to update those links on the release of new lists. ダイノガイ千?!? · Talk⇒Dinoguy1000 17:37, June 15, 2010 (UTC)

At least it's still a sidebar. Fallensilence 17:39, June 15, 2010 (UTC)Fallensilence

Could a link to a random card that isn't illegal be added? I'd love a way to randomly browse the many cards just so I could come across a random one to put in my deck. --24.136.234.89 00:58, June 17, 2010 (UTC)

Unfortunately, that kind of specificity isn't possible via Special:Random (and thus can't be implemented in the sidebar), though it may be possible to display a random card via Semantic MediaWiki or DPL - I really don't know enough about either of those to be sure though. ダイノガイ千?!? · Talk⇒Dinoguy1000 01:10, June 17, 2010 (UTC)
All the cards are usually in both the TCG cards and OCG cards groups. There are already links for random lore, galleries, etc. There must be some way of doing that. --24.136.234.89 03:42, June 17, 2010 (UTC)
Each of those is based on a namespace - for instance, Special:Random/User is going to give you a random user page. TCG-legal cards are not noted as such in any way in their page title, much less by a namespace, so it's just not possible. ダイノガイ千?!? · Talk⇒Dinoguy1000 06:31, June 17, 2010 (UTC)

What about a link about all the users? Then people can learn and thank who posted them in the first place without the recent updates. Fallensilence 02:28, June 17, 2010 (UTC)Fallensilence

That would really end up just being a massive vanity page. The current system of user pages linked from discussions and page histories is the best solution. ダイノガイ千?!? · Talk⇒Dinoguy1000 06:31, June 17, 2010 (UTC)

Can we allow the Deck Types to branch out into Deck Types A-C, D-F and so on much like how the My Yugioh Deck Wiki does with their sidebar? It'll make it easier for people to navigate through Deck Types. I agree 100% to splitting the Yu-Gi-Oh! Wiki Discussion forum into General Discussion and Wiki Discussion. As for the banlist, I like Dinoguy1000's suggestion to use redirects.-- HHTurtle  (Talk) 03:29, June 17, 2010 (UTC)

That sounds good to me; depending on how the sidebar plays along with subsublists, we could have separate sublists for deck type list pages and for popular/well-used/whatever deck types. ダイノガイ千?!? · Talk⇒Dinoguy1000 06:31, June 17, 2010 (UTC)

I would like the sidebar should be made so we all can see what pages we like would be edited and be able to have friends or something UltimateCombos 05:27, June 17, 2010 (UTC)

There's really no way to set up the software to show what pages should be edited, since that is a pretty abstract idea - to one person, on one wiki, a page that should be edited is just fine as-is to another person on another wiki. Secondly, the wiki software has no built-in support for friends; the closest you could come is maintaining a list of users you consider friends on your user page. ダイノガイ千?!? · Talk⇒Dinoguy1000 06:31, June 17, 2010 (UTC)

That actually sounds pretty difficult to add friends like myspace or something like that on wiki. After all, this is wiki. This isn't a place to add friends. Fallensilence 22:08, June 17, 2010 (UTC)

Just a small suggestion about the search field: don't make it display 'search this wiki' by default. If you click in the search field at an incorrect time and start typing, it might remove the text too late (so that the first part of whatever you were typing gets removed), or not remove it at all (so that 'search this wiki' is included in the search). Not only does this slow people down for a service that is meant to be accessible quickly, it is also highly annoying.

We don't have any control over how the search box operates. ダイノガイ千?!? · Talk⇒Dinoguy1000 20:31, July 21, 2010 (UTC)

Decks[edit]

I suggest that we maybe add a section that shows some of the popular decks that people use, or maybe some Staple cards. It can be a tab that has the most visited decks, such as Lightsworn, Chaos, Blackwing, Zombie, Machina, etc. Also, maybe a section that brings you to a random card, such as one from LOB or even one up to STBL J61707 01:50, June 21, 2010 (UTC)

Please put the four tildes. And I agree because people will be informed about popular decks on the sidebar rather than searching for it throughout the wikia. Fallensilence 00:57, June 21, 2010 (UTC)

Thanks you Jg1707. Fallensilence 01:53, June 21, 2010 (UTC)

Random card would be a pretty neat feature. Bonus points if you hit Shapesnatch! :D InfernityRevenger (talkcontribs) 20:34, June 29, 2010 (UTC)

sidebar links[edit]

i'm still not sure what i'm asked to do? if you were asking about new topics please put at least one histroyal fact(s) about the God cards.

I don't know how you guys can do this but it is very important to send a message to the new duelist. tell them that the older people aren't always the way to go. Dueling is about learning and taking experiences where ever you go and making friends. dueling isn't just about wining with the new cards with powerful effects. It is about finding out what it right for you and building your own deck. I think that is what we forget sometimes. to build our own deck and build it in a way where they win with carefully thought out plans and strategies. I almost completely forgot what it means to duel, but when I saw the last entry before mine I remembered. I just hope someway or some how that message gets out to the world and every duelist everywhere. I'm an excellent duelist. I'm running an Neo-Spacain/ elemental hero deck. I was using a Crystal beast deck without any traps. You know it is these type of decks that can show who someone really is. The deck is like a reflection of yourself. If you copy someone elses work and deck. You aren't showing your self, and not learning or gaining anything as a person. When duelist hear this message I hope I inspired someone to look at themselves and their deck and become the true king of games. Then me and that person can have a really good time. By the way, has anyone realized it isn't fun getting schooled by decks that others built to match card for card to the champ. When people start to realize that the game will be so much more fun and cooler to play.

Please sign your post with four tildes (~~~~) on Talk Pages and Forum Threads.

Anonymous, I don't really understand what you are talking about? Why did you were so sentimental about dueling when we were discussing changes to the sidebar links?

As for the links to popular deck types and staples, I don't like it one bit. It becomes too redundant. I mean who doesn't know what Heavy Storm does? If someone was going to build another Lightsworn deck or something they are better off going to the deck guide. It's just boring for this Wikia to showcase metadecks even on the first page. What about the people who wanted to make a different kind of deck, they would have to navigate through multiple links just to get to the page.

I suggest that we have the sublist for Deck Types similar to the index of the encyclopedia.-- HHTurtle  (Talk) 06:47, June 21, 2010 (UTC)

Main Page[edit]

I have in interesting observation, some of the ideas of things to put on the side bar (latest sets, Characters, and types of card sets) are already on the Main Page, if we impliment the new sidebar, shouldn't we slightly update the Main Page?--BassNettoHikari2 17:16, June 24, 2010 (UTC)

It can happen but can it work? That is the question. Fallensilence 17:18, June 24, 2010 (UTC)

A dueling corner or something along the lines of that. So that people that are on the wikia can duel without having to use MSN, or YVD. We could try to make some sort of program that works like MSN messenger on the wiki, so we can have some fun on this, an online version of yugioh on the wiki, where duelists young and old can play a friendly childrens card game, and check out cool stuff here at the same time. Random cards, etc.[edit]

How about adding to the random area entries for "Random Card.. Random Anime Character.. Random Episode or Manga Chapter" LordChaotic (talkcontribs) 01:17, July 5, 2010 (UTC)

As mentioned elsewhere, we currently can't add such links because they are not technically possible. Currently, random pages can only be generated based on namespace (for instance, Special:Random/Card Gallery will link to a random card gallery, that is, a random page in the "Card Gallery:" namespace), whereas card pages, characters, and chapters/episodes are currently only distinguished by categories. ダイノガイ千?!? · Talk⇒Dinoguy1000 04:33, July 5, 2010 (UTC)

Right under the random page link, i thnk there should be a random card link. Because sometimes i just want to see and discover new cards possibly to add to my use. I don't know about anyone else but for me personally it would make it much easeir to create a perfect deck to my likings. — This unsigned comment was made by 68.195.190.179 (talkcontribs) 20:51, July 8, 2010

It was mentioned above that is not possible within the tech that the wiki (or any wiki) has. Cheesedude (talkcontribs) 00:03, July 9, 2010 (UTC)
I'm not sure when this feature was added, but it's now possible to get a random page based on a category. Special:Randomincategory/Duel Monsters cards can be used to get a random article from Category:Duel Monsters cards. -- Deltaneos (talk) 22:28, November 22, 2010 (UTC)

Editing tips[edit]

How about for "editings tips", the Deck template would be a choice to insert, so just click and POOF! Instant Deck template. Hopefully this well hope a bunch of newbies who list their cards like this:

monsters d-hero d-dude d-hero departed d-hero defender d-hero dread monger

etc. Drew-Gi-Oh! (talkcontribs) 01:17, July 11, 2010 (UTC)

Wait, what editing tips? If you mean the sidebar which shows by default while editing a page, this discussion doesn't concern that, but the navigational sidebar generated by MediaWiki:Monaco-sidebar. Besides, I'm not really sure if we can edit the editing tips sidebar, and if so, how the deck template might fit in. ダイノガイ千?!? · Talk⇒Dinoguy1000 02:21, July 11, 2010 (UTC)
I agree with this, too many people don't know how to use deck template which reduces us deck helpers/creators/editors will to help with peoples decks. Occasionally we decide to help them "template-ize" their decks but re-posting and adding the link brackets and such to a randomly listed deck is an annoying and tedious process. Is there a way to possibly just add a button that inserts the deck template in? It might help the noobs out a bit more. | Also I like the idea of adding deck and/or archetype links to the side bar because that will allow people for quicker access to stuff they might want to read. Similarly, deck lists from recent tournaments and Konami events and such could be posted as "The Recent Meta" link or something, allowing people to know whats hot and popular. Another idea could be linking ourselves to other online dueling websites so we can create traffic between their sites and our site. And though I find it highly unlikely, maybe somebody with programming skillz can create a built in duel system on our wikia which can be linked to through the sidebar, though that would require servers and processing power and such. Though if it were made it would be a lot easier since many people from other dueling sites usually come here for rulings and card explanations and such. That's just my 3 cents. That's right, I said 3 cents. u5h3ra1i' Relished Saber Player 08:29, July 23, 2010 (UTC)

Yes, the Featured users menu will be removed in the new version. I doubt there would be anyone who likes the old version better, but in that event, users can define a personal sidebar in the Monaco skin (see Help:Sidebar#Users for more information). ダイノガイ千?!? · Talk⇒Dinoguy1000 20:37, July 27, 2010 (UTC)

Feel free to copy it to Special:Mypage/Monaco-sidebar to test it yourself (but keep in mind you'll have to copy any updates made to my copy (or, ultimately, the "master" sidebar)). Thoughts? ダイノガイ千?!? · Talk⇒Dinoguy1000 23:31, August 3, 2010 (UTC)

Just checked it out, and its nice, but a few suggestions. It might make the code longer, but the stuff in the #category isn't quite as useful. Put in a "Latest sets", include the 5 or so latest sets, since they are visited the most. Change series to "Anime" and maybe put in a Manga section. Maybe split up the First Series and the Second Series Animes. Forum part is Really nice. Sets does't quite sound right, needs better wording. In Cards, maybe instead put in the types of cards (Normal Monsters, Spells, Synchro Monsters, etc...). In the sets section add in Portal;:Collectible Tins. Gameplay section seems semi-random (Draw a card?), polish that up. The "cards" area links seem to have extremely large link pages. Well there are my rambling thoughts.Maaaayyybbeee even a YGOTAS Section, since it so popular, and we have a lot of stuff on it --BassNettoHikari2 (talkcontribs) 07:53, August 4, 2010 (UTC)

New skin[edit]

In the new skin, there'll be a navigation menu across the top of pages instead of in the sidebar. However it can only have four sections. See the "Vines", "Trees", "Bushes", "Transplanted" etc here for example. Wikia did send a helper around to "fix" the new menu. Since the Monaco skin will be phased out soon after the new skin is made the default, we may as well focus on the four section menu. I don't think the menu they gave us will do. Characters and episodes aren't the main content parts of the site. -- Deltaneos (talk) 17:26, September 28, 2010 (UTC)

What would you suggest for the four sections (I'm thinking that the last one should cover community-related links...)? To what degree can we use submenus in Oasis' nav menu? And have they said anything more about the fate of Monobook (I haven't been following Oasis' development terribly closely, and if Monobook stays, we still have a reason to work on the sidebar too)? ダイノガイ千?!? · Talk⇒Dinoguy1000 17:45, September 28, 2010 (UTC)
If we were to move to this new 4 tab drop down menu (I prefer the sidebar), We would need one for the card game in general, deck types, current lists, basic terminology/rules, etc..., latest 5 sets or so(I know we have the latest OCG set on the home, but as was previously stated, the packs have more visitors than any other part of the site. Maybe an Anime/Manga session. I tink that would cover the basics...BassNettoHikari2...Chat Page... 18:08, September 28, 2010 (UTC)
The skin is simply called Wikia. Oasis was just a name used while testing. Personal css and js pages still use Oasis in their names for now, but the MediaWiki ones are called Wikia. Oasis will be the name of a theme.
Monobook will be kept as a personal preference. Only Uncyclopedia projects will be allowed to use it as a default.
There is another limitation on the new menu. We can't sub-subdivide. e.g. we can divide "Card game" into "Sets", "Deck types" etc., but won't be able to divide "Sets" into sections, so linking to the latest five sets may not feasible.
As for suggestions:
  • Card game
    • Forbidden & Limited
    • Sets
    • Deck types
    • Archetypes
  • Animanga
    • Characters
    • Episodes
    • Chapters
  • Community
    • Forums
    • IRC
    • Help
We can link them to either categories or portal pages. -- Deltaneos (talk) 18:36, September 28, 2010 (UTC)
I had known about the new skin's name just being "Wikia", but thought that might be rather confusing (the naming choice is just as retarded as the skin; it can't be good business to conflate your business itself with your product). Other than that, the more I see of and hear about the new skin, the more retarded it sounds. I don't want to go back to Monobook, but I don't doubt I will once the switch is made.
Now that I'm done ranting (for now...), your proposal only has three top-tier items; were you unable to decide what a good fourth item would be? And I am assuming your personal Oasis/Wikia nav menu is Special:Mypage/Wiki-navigation? I'll have to play around with it myself. ダイノガイ千?!? · Talk⇒Dinoguy1000 18:48, September 28, 2010 (UTC)
I didn't realise I only gave three. Meh. Maybe break characters into its own section, change animanga to series and add video games as a subsection.
I don't know about the personal wiki-navigation. (Since it's only four, my plans to turn mine into "article", "discussion", "edit", "history", "move" etc. buttons is no good.) -- Deltaneos (talk) 19:47, September 28, 2010 (UTC)
I'd be willing to bet we could hack the menu pretty much any way we wanted with Javascript, and I would also wager we'd hardly be the only ones to want to do so, meaning it's only a matter of time before someone offers a script for removing its limits (if such a script hasn't already been posted). ダイノガイ千?!? · Talk⇒Dinoguy1000 00:32, September 29, 2010 (UTC)
Why not just use video games as the fourth top-tier item? As for the animanga sub-sections, what about using DM, GX and 5D's as those (maybe to the portal pages) and provide links to the character, episode and chapter stuff from there. Cheesedude (talkcontribs) 23:44, September 28, 2010 (UTC)
I don't know if Video games need a whole section, and while large, and not fun to get to (I have a hard time getting to YGO 2010). The problem for the AniManga is you have the First Series, Second Series (and 2nd can be split into 3), plus they all have their mangas, that would be one large drop down menu. On community, I like the idea of simply listing all the forums on there, easier navigation. I the card game we should have a link to the massive Gameplay and Glossary section (a new page would need to be created)...BassNettoHikari2...Chat Page... 14:39, September 29, 2010 (UTC)
