Summary[edit]

Yugi, Joey, Téa, Tristan, and Bakura have just been trapped in a cave by a boulder placed by Bandit Keith and his gang. Despite pushing with all their might, they fail to move it an inch. Tristan says they need to find another way out, and Bakura takes out his Millennium Ring and begins walking away. He follows one path of a fork, saying that Pegasus Castle is that way. (In the dub, Bakura reveals that his Ring can track other Millennium Items, and Joey says he can't wait to get his hands on Pegasus, which the latter hears.) The rest of the gang follow him.

Meanwhile, Pegasus himself is watching the gang from the dining room of Pegasus Castle. He cuts to another video feed, which shows Mokuba Kaiba with his ankles chained in the castle's dungeon. Mokuba, with his head down, can only think about his brother. He flashes back to when they both were kids, and urges Seto not to worry about him. He flashes back again to him and Seto playing chess, thinking that whenever they were together, he always had a great time. He takes out a locket with a picture of young Seto on it, and cries, thinking that he just wants to see Seto again. (In the dub, Mokuba knows that his brother will come to rescue him, since when they were kids, he never lost at anything, so he definitely won't lose to Pegasus.)

Back in the cave, the gang is still walking through the tunnels. Joey asks Bakura if he is sure they are headed in the right direction, observing that they have been walking for a while and the path is getting narrower. Téa says that the walls look different too, and Joey says that this part of the cave is man-made. Yugi says that it's like they are walking in a maze. (In the dub, Téa asks if someone could be living down here, and Joey responds that they would have to be mole-people.) Bakura stops for a second, then starts running, continuing to follow his Millennium Ring. The rest of the gang sprint after him, and when they finally catch up to him, they see him standing in front of a doorway of bright light. The light slowly disappears to reveal a large underground Duel Arena.

Before they can react, the group hears a noise. Two men somersault, backflip, and eventually land in front of the group, introducing themselves as the guardians of the underground dungeon known as the Paradox Brothers. Yugi realizes that since they have Dueling Gauntlets and Star Chips, they must be Eliminators. (The Paradox Brothers say this themselves in the dub.) They say that it has been a while since anyone got lost in the cave, and to learn the correct path, they must defeat them in a Duel. They reveal that there are two doors exiting the dungeon, and only one is correct — and if the group manages to win, they can pick one of the two doors. Dox says that if they pick the wrong door, they will be doomed to wander the labyrinth for eternity.

Para declares that the Duel will be a special two-on-two match — a Tag-Team Duel. Yugi transforms into Yami Yugi and steps forward, telling Joey that they must accept the challenge. The brothers snicker and welcome Yugi and Joey to their Labyrinth Field. Joey says it doesn't look like a labyrinth to him. (In the dub, he is annoyed by the brothers' constant rhyming.) Para says that they will see soon enough, and Dox tells them to wager their Star Chips. Joey wagers two Chips, and Yugi wagers four, such that if they win, they will each have ten — enough to reach Pegasus Castle. The brothers snicker and think that the group will never reach the surface again.

The Duel begins. Dox goes first and Summons "Labyrinth Wall". The whole field lights up and begins to glow, and walls begin to rise across the field, forming a maze. Dox explains that Summoning "Labyrinth Wall" creates a Labyrinth Field.

Meanwhile, Seto Kaiba is walking down a pathway in the direction of Pegasus Castle. He holds up a locket, identical to Mokuba's but with a picture of young Mokuba inside. He stares at it for a second, mouthing Mokuba's name. (In the dub, he vows to make Pegasus pay, and says he should realize that nothing will stop him from rescuing Mokuba.)

Back in the dungeon, Dox explains the rules of a Tag-Team Duel. Each player begins with the normal 2000 Life Points, but if either teammate loses all of their Life Points, their whole team loses, which causes Joey to tense up. Para says that the turn order will proceed Dox, then Yugi, then Para, then Joey. (He says this incorrectly in the dub.) Para next explains the rules of the Labyrinth Field, stating that all monsters will be played similar to chess pieces, with Attack Position monsters being able to move the same distance as their Level. However, any monster that gets destroyed will never escape the Labyrinth.

Para says that if they make it through the Labyrinth, they can choose one of two doors. Joey protests, saying that their lives are on the line, and they cannot just leave it up to random chance. He asks for a hint. The brothers oblige, and say that from now on, one of them will always tell the truth, while the other will always lie. Pegasus is intrigued by this new challenge from back in Pegasus Castle. (In the dub, he says that Yugi had better solve the riddle, or he will never see the light of day again.) Yugi asks the brothers if there are any lies in what they just said, and they respond negatively. Para and Dox each say that their door is the correct door. The riddle reminds Joey of a different riddle which he had heard before, the Two Cities riddle, which goes as follows: A traveler is at a fork in the road, with one path leading to a town of truth-tellers and one path to a town of liars. The traveler wants to go to the town of truth-tellers. He spots a passerby on the street, but he is only allowed to ask him one question, with the riddle being what question the traveler should ask the bystander. Joey remembers the answer - "take me to your town". The truth-teller will lead him to his own town, while the liar will lead him to the other town — the truth-tellers town.

Para and Dox say that both Yugi and Joey each get to ask one question. Joey, triumphantly, asks the brothers which door they are guarding. He thinks that now both the truth-teller and the liar will point to the correct door. Para and Dox both raise their fingers, then point them at Dox's door. Joey grins and says that he solved the riddle, and that Dox's door is the correct one. (In the dub, he thinks that Yugi should now ask Dox what the correct door is.) However, Yugi doesn't fully believe the answer. He says that although Joey's answer is correct from one point of view, the brothers cannot be trusted to keep their word. He reveals that he also knows about the Two Cities riddle, and says that it is dangerous to apply it to their current situation. He says that there is always the possibility that they are both liars — and if so, there is no guarantee there is a town at the end of the road to begin with. Yugi says that the only way forward is to continue the Duel, and that they will eventually figure out the correct door.

Yugi thinks that he cannot win without first entering the dungeon. He Summons "Beaver Warrior" and advances it four spaces into the Labyrinth as it is Level 4. Para chuckles and says that now he will show Yugi the true terror of the Labyrinth Field. He activates "Polymerization", fusing "Labyrinth Wall" with "Shadow Ghoul". Yugi is scared by this move as a shadow begins to dart along the walls of the Labyrinth. It rushes all the way to the other end and the Ghoul emerges above "Beaver Warrior". Para orders the new monster, "Wall Shadow", to attack with "Reaping Claw Slash", and "Beaver Warrior" is destroyed. "Wall Shadow" merges back into the Labyrinth as Yugi's Life Points fall to 1600. Joey protests that their move was illegal, but Para says that because "Wall Shadow" moved along the wall, it did not move any spaces at all and therefore can move and attack as much as it wants. The brothers say that the Labyrinth itself is a giant monster, and that Yugi and Joey are trapped inside with no hope of escape.

On Joey's turn, he Summons "Axe Raider" in Attack Position and Sets a card. Joey says he won't advance "Axe Raider" forward because it cannot attack an unseen enemy, and it will still be able to attack at any moment. Yugi praises Joey's move, saying that staying clear of the wall is an effective way to avoid the attacks of "Wall Shadow". Téa says that she hopes Joey can keep up his strong play, and Tristan says that he had better, since the Paradox Brothers will be looking to gang up on the weaker of their two opponents.

Dox Sets a card, which he thinks to himself is "Jirai Gumo", which can destroy monsters in the labyrinth that land on certain spaces. He then Summons the powerful "Labyrinth Tank", a Level 7 monster, and advances it seven spaces into the labyrinth. Dox thinks that with "Labyrinth Tank" on the field, Yugi and Joey will have no escape from the Labyrinth.

On Yugi's turn, he Summons "Celtic Guardian", a Level 4 monster, and advances it four spaces into the labyrinth, despite it having a lower ATK than "Wall Shadow", which Bakura points out. Para calls Yugi a fool (accompanied by another pair of backflips in the dub), and orders "Wall Shadow" to attack "Celtic Guardian". It darts along the walls and attempts to slash at "Celtic Guardian", but Yugi grins as "Wall Shadow" is ensnared by a chain. Joey reveals that he activated his Trap, "Kunai with Chain", which "Axe Raider" used to capture "Wall Shadow". In addition, it also grants "Celtic Guardian" an extra 500 ATK, which brings it up to 1900. "Celtic Guardian" counterattacks and slashes through "Wall Shadow" with its sword, dropping Para to 1700 Life Points. The gang celebrate Yugi and Joey's teamwork, with Tristan saying that Joey really has become stronger. Joey declares that with the power of teamwork, they are sure to win.

Back at Pegasus Castle, Pegasus holds up his wine glass and commends Yugi and Joey's move, saying that he cannot wait to see what happens next. He hears a knock on his door, and Croquet enters the room. Pegasus tells him that he already knows the news: they have not found Kaiba yet. Croquet says that they will keep searching, but Pegasus says that he does not mind, since Kaiba will come to him sooner or later. (In the dub, Croquet's news is that Kaiba has been spotted, and Pegasus scolds him for seemingly always being the last to know.) His Millennium Eye glints, as down in the dungeon, Mokuba reminds himself not to lose hope, as Kaiba will come for him soon. He flashes back to when Kaiba beat up a bully who had stolen his toy. He vows to not give in and to protect KaibaCorp. (In the dub, Mokuba wonders what's taking Kaiba so long to rescue him and stop Pegasus.)

Meanwhile, Kaiba walks briskly towards Pegasus Castle, and tells Mokuba that he is coming.

Featured Duel: Yami Yugi and Joey Wheeler vs. Paradox Brothers[edit]

9×9 maze created by "Labyrinth Wall".

Turn 1: Dox
Dox Normal Summons "Labyrinth Wall" (0/3000). During this Duel and exclusively in the anime, "Labyrinth Wall" acts like a Field Magic Card in addition to a monster. Once activated, "Labyrinth Wall" creates a 9×9 maze on the Dueling Arena that each player's monster must go through before they can reach the other side. Monsters can move a number of spaces equivalent to their Level. Monsters can attack each other inside the maze, but must be on tiles adjacent to one another.

Turn 2: Yami Yugi
Yugi draws. He then Normal Summons "Beaver Warrior" (1200/1500) in Attack Position. Since it's a Level 4 monster, Yugi moves it 4 spaces inside the maze.

Turn 3: Para
Para draws. He then activates "Polymerization" to fuse "Shadow Ghoul" into "Labyrinth Wall" and Special Summon "Wall Shadow" (1600/3000) in Attack Position. "Wall Shadow" can travel through the walls of the maze instead of actual spaces, allowing it to strike any monster that is inside the labyrinth instantaneously. "Wall Shadow" attacks and destroys "Beaver Warrior" (Yugi: 2000 → 1600 LP).

Turn 4: Joey
Joey draws. He then Normal Summons "Axe Raider" (1700/1150) in Attack Position and Sets a card.

Turn 5: Dox
Dox draws. He then Sets "Jirai Gumo" on a space in the maze and Normal Summons "Labyrinth Tank" (2400/2400) in Attack Position. Since it's a Level 7 monster, Dox moves it 7 spaces inside the maze.

Turn 6: Yami Yugi
Yugi draws. He then Normal Summons "Celtic Guardian" (1400/1200) in Attack Position. Since it's a Level 4 monster, he moves it 4 spaces inside the maze.

Turn 7: Para
Para draws. "Wall Shadow" attacks "Celtic Guardian", but Joey activates his face-down "Kunai with Chain", equipping ito "Axe Raider" and increasing the ATK of "Celtic Guardian" and "Axe Raider" by 500 ("Celtic Guardian: 1400 → 1900/1200, "Axe Raider": 1700 → 2200/1150). "Celtic Guardian" destroys "Wall Shadow" (Para: 2000 → 1700 LP). On Para's End Phase, the boost that "Celtic Guardian" got from "Kunai with Chain" expires ("Celtic Guardian": 1900 → 1400/1200).

Duel continues in the next episode.

Differences in adaptations[edit]

  • The scenes on Pegasus' view screen have been changed in the US version to show a hidden arena, and then a close-up of Yami Yugi. Yami Yugi and Joey can be seen dueling the brothers in the arena, which is a mistake because they are still in the tunnels. In the Japanese, he's watching Yugi and the others walking through the tunnels, with small views of other scenes along the side of the screen.
  • In the US version, Para's fierce face is replaced with a milder image from earlier.
  • A long shot of the duel is added to the US version, to provide a transition from the commercial break.
  • Another scene of the Paradox Brothers' acrobatics is added to the US version. The Japanese version goes right to Para's ordering the attack.
  • A shot of fierce Para telling Yami Yugi his "Elf Swordsman" is doomed and his Life Points with it, is replaced in the US version with Dox saying the same thing.
  • Dox sets "Jirai Gumo" as a trap card, which, in the Japanese version, it was, but in the US version, it has a monster card design as it does in real life (though the ATK and DEF are different for this duel).
  • The words "TO BE CONTINUED" are added at the end of the dub episode.
  • In the US version, Para says that the turns will cycle starting with him, then, Yugi, then his brother, then Joey, and then back to him. He and Dox are actually in the other's spot in the cycle. (This is possibly due to the direction switch of reading the brothers' "name").

Mistakes[edit]

  • In the US version, for one scene, "Labyrinth Tank" is in its original Japanese card format.
