Appearance[edit]

Personality[edit]

Zoroa is a calm and powerful mage. He was once a caring individual, who even helped create Graybeard for shunned magic users. However his quest to learn the truth of magic caused him to compromise on moral principles, resulting in him acting manipulatively and losing empathy for others.

Many of these traits are a result of the life he led before the present. Years ago, Zoroa had been shunned and feared for his magic. Upon discovering his power, his own mother would keep him under a cellar, causing him to lead a lonely childhood with none understanding him. After his mother perished, he would encounter further discrimination by many others who saw him as a monster or a tormented him. It's because of this that during his early years, Zoroa refused to use magic and believed he should never use it to remain human. Even rejecting assistance from Spoon when they first met when the latter tried using magic to help Zoroa.

However, through exposure and forming a bond with Spoon, Zoroa slowly developed past this mindset. Soon gaining a desire to understand the nature of his magic after years of shunning this side of him. After running away together from their school, Zoroa joined Spoon in finding a new land to make Greybeard. He trusted Spoon greatly, both with his power, and as a friend. Confiding with him the terrible dreams he has due to this trust.

Zoroa also loved his mother greatly. Despite her actions towards him, he kept her hairpin as a memento. As such, when a group of bullies discarded it, instead of continuing to endure their torment, Zoroa, for the first time, acted against them in rage and used his magical power as an act of revenge and only stopped when Spoon was hurt.

Abilities[edit]

Zoroa is a powerful mage and is very intelligent. He is capable of many spells and holds great power that puts him on par with the three Magistus. When Endymion assumes his flame-based magic is power obtained from another world, Zoroa states that it is merely the true extent of his original power. As many years ago, he willingly parted with much of his magical power through a charm Spoon gave him, weakening him. As a result of being forced to carry heavy loads during his teenage years, Zoroa possesses greater physical strength than the average human.

Many of Zoroa's dreams alongside Spoon's words suggest that Zoroa's immense magical power comes from elsewhere. Upon looking through the Theurgy, it's implied this power comes from the spirit Vahram.

Zoroa's spells include:

  • Teleportation: Zoroa can appear in another location as a small flame before showing himself.
  • Levitation: Can float a few meters in the air with his magic.
  • Absolute Flame Divine Lance: An attack composing of a fire spear that Aleister claims it is incomparable to the other Magistus' own magic.

Biography[edit]

Before founding Graybeard[edit]

Zoroa, using magic when he was 12, scaring his mother

Zoroa possessed great magic since he was born. His powers terrified his mother and he lived a lonely childhood with nobody who understood him. On one occasion when he was 12, he inadvertently used his magic to set a book on fire and was thrown into a cellar afterwards.[1]

When his mothed died, Zoroa kept a hairpin that belonged to her, which had become slightly singed, as a memento.[1]

Zoroa was sent to an institution, which had people who feared and bullied him. One group of bullies acted disgusted by the fact that he had magic and watched as he was forced to carry heavy quantities of goods up an extremely long set of stairs, while saying it should be easy for a monster like him. He refrained from using magic to help him, seeing such abstinence as a form of discipline to keep himself human. He understood why people were afraid of him and had no desire to use magic again.[1]

Spoon creates a portal to try and help Zoroa with his heavy load.

For four years, Zoroa continued to carry goods in increasingly heavy quantities until he was 16. At this point, he carried loads consisting of multiple large crates, sacks, a suitcase, and sticks, all tied together and onto a ladder strapped to his back. He also caught the attention of Spoon, another orphan with magic powers who lived at the institution. Spoon had the ability to see the magic power in others and when he saw Zoroa for the first time, he felt a completely unfamiliar magic power inside him and sensed that Zoroa might need him. Spoon attempted to help him by using his magic to create a portal Zoroa could use to take his load straight to the top of the stairs, but he refused to take any magical assistance. However he did bond with Spoon, having finally met somebody else who understood him.[1]

One of Zoroa's bullies found his mother's hairpin in his room. The bullies surrounded and taunted him for possessing a woman's accessory. He explained its importance to him and asked to have it back. However they called it junk and one them pretended he was about to give it back before throwing it into the sea. Zoroa became enraged and uncontrollably unleashed his magic. He generated a large amount of flames and launched two giant fireballs at the bullies. However Spoon intercepted the projectiles, taking the hit himself, saving the bullies. Zoroa rushed to the aid of Spoon, who had one burnt arm, but was otherwise okay and relieved that nobody was killed.[1]

The charm being used to absorb Zoroa's magic power

Spoon gave Zoroa a magic-absorbing charm his parents had paid magicians to create to keep his own magic from going out of control, like Zoroa's had against the bullies. Zoroa was hesitant to accept, as the item was precious to Spoon, but Spoon said that it is okay, so long as it is of use to him. Zoroa also found it interesting to learn that Spoon's parents loved him, despite him possessing magic. Zoroa's magic was too great for the charm to absorb in its entirety, but Spoon felt it took enough to stop Zoroa going out of control again. Zoroa returned the charm to Spoon, entrusting his power to him and said that he will always be by his side. The two then decided that they could no longer stay at the institution.[1]

Zoroa and Spoon left the institution by boat and traveled across different lands to find a place where people who posses magic could live in peace. They ended up building Graybeard,[1] a haven for spellcasters, away from people were fearful or disdainful towards them.[2]

After founding Greybeard[edit]

Graybeard served as a place where spellcasters would be free to conduct their magic research safe from oppression.[3]

During a feast, Zoroa noticed Endymion scoffing at Aleister Crowley's theories on another world, which magic power flows from and the possibility to summoning spirits from that world. He warned Endymion to not be so dismissive, as magic was still a broad topic, which worth studying in every area as anything could be possible.[2]

Zoroa showed up at the spring where Crowley, Endymion, and Rilliona encountered a spirit summoned from another world just after Chorozo caused the spirit to disappear by absorbing all its magic power.[2]

Zoroa repeatedly had a dream in which he was confronted by another being who grabs him by the wrist. The dream played a part Zoroa's awakening and the crisis that was about to befall Astrodia. He woke up at his home one time sweating and Spoon came into his room asking if he had that dream again. Afterwards Zoroa asked Spoon why he helped him back when they were in the institute and Spoon told him about the unfamiliar magic power he sensed inside him and how he felt he might need his help. Zoroa pondered on the idea of an unfamiliar magic power and wondered why he was born with such powerful magic. Spoon assured him that there was no rush in finding out. However Zoroa was concerned as the magic power inside him had been aching lately and that it gave him a bad feeling.[1]

Rilliona showed a crystalline meteorite she purchased to Zoroa, Spoon, Crowley, and Endymion. Crowley recognized a mountain in an image that in the meteorite and Spoon was able to create a portal to take them all there. The group then followed a magic power into a cavern, where they found Theurgy[1], the gate to other worlds.[3] Zoroa curiously walked closer to Theurgy Zoroa, where Vahram then communicated with him, saying that his voice has finally reached him.[1]

Opening Theurgy[edit]

Zoroa, after betraying his companions

Zoroa eventually went on to become a Magistus, as did Crowley, Endymion, and Rilliona. However Zoroa betrayed the others.[2] Because of Zoroa, all Magistus ended up opening Theurgy, the gate to other worlds. This was to result in a flow of magic power into their world. Despite knowing this would result in the deaths of many people and other lifeforms, Zoroa saw their deaths as part of a natural process necessary for the commencement of a new era, regarding the search for truth as being more important.[3]

Crowley, Endymion, and Rilliona attempted to combine their powers to close Theurgy, but were confronted by Zoroa, whom they failed to reason with. He launched an attack on the trio, who then responded by summoning their sacred guardians.[3]
